Mezz My lovely Mum and I had a good day in our own little 'Max and Paddy bubble.' I make allowances for these days but, I must admit, We were BOTH baffled by £1land selling cardboard cut out's of Prince Harry and Kate Middleton. Not a Markle n sight. My lovely Mum already thinks she and her Pa have staged a great publicity stunt to get the most cash for them both before jilting Harry at the alter. This didn't help :-D

Jill Took a look, Mezz and like the look of the website. I suppose it depends what you are hoping its future might be and whether you are getting the followers you hoped for? You post your work on here and so I didn't 'follow'. Anyhow, I'm sure you will come to the right decision for your own needs. Jx

Kay Nice blog Mezz, it's always good to have your own website that you're in control of. On my screen, the blue headings are a bit hard to read against the yellow. Also, I get the options to "Edit Blog" and "Delete Blog".

Mezz That's my first wasp of the year dispatched !! I was watching the birds in the apple tree & the bees on the cherry tree when it had the nerve to whizz in past my ear. One coronary (mine) and a can of killer later it stopped moving. I am all for live and let live when it comes to Mother Nature and her various ways of ensuring the Earth keeps living and breathing. I even accept that some humans like to say "We are all God's creatures." ** Well, to those that believe in such things, I say this; I shall continue my Goddessly crusade to rid the Earth of wasps. Because, I am convinced, Wasps are NOT one of God's creatures. They are the very Spawn of Satan himself ! ! ** Other Dieties are available.

Mashie And the two don't go together I find, peeing and electric fences. One of my jobs when in NZ was emptying composting toilets, and putting the wee on the compost. Nitrogen rich, better than flushing it through the sewer system too. Same with poo. If kept for a year, v good for gardens. So much energy and money is spent on transporting and processing our waste products, to no benefit.

Stovers Totally respect your view, Mashers. My own comment is based on, yes, the irritation of having them hassling us near-endlessly in the spring and summer, but also a certain hypersensitivity to their stings. But that is not a deal-breaker. What is, though, is the fact that I love bees and, wasps can attack and kill them. Notwithstanding the wonderful news that a Europe-wide ban on certain insecticides is being implemented - insecticides that kill bees - the huge drop in bee numbers anyway is a troubling development. I read recently that without bees, the world's food supplies would run out in four years. Would I ban lions because the eat wildebeest? No, but wildebeest, whilst being important to lions and small sections of the population, are not intrinsic to the survival of our species. Yes, nature is a virtuous circle and is important, bees are its crucial element and the few wasps that I manage to remove from the ecosystem will not affect numbers and may save me considerable discomfort. Even though hornets are far, far worse than wasps, they are not interested in humans or, usually, sugary things, which is a relief as we are plagued with those, too. Sadly, they sometimes kill bees... PS. I am a honey freak :-)

Mashie Ok, so we humans have skewed the populations of other species, eg bees, and so I As a human can justify polishing off wasps because of that? I don't see it. If you are allergic to wasp stings, that's different. Solitary bees pollinate far more than honey bees, and we can very cheaply create habitats for them to counteract habitat loss, if that is the concern. Every wasp is a piece of life, that should be valued. On the other hand I do support badger culls because of the effect of TB on cattle and farming, and the hedgehog population, but these are more tangible effects I think than a few wasps on the bee population and pollination.

Stovers Fair enough, Mashers. However, I'm not sure about badger culls... I mean, they're lovely. *Eh? What are you saying, Stovers, you've had to put up an electric fence around your garden to stop them digging up your lawn!*

Mashie I appear to be able to hold opposing views on this, but i wouldn't kill another creature just because it is annoying. if it was threat to me other than a sting, that's another kettle of fish. Stovers - my lawn is like the Somme because of badgers looking for worms in the long winter we just had.

Stovers I suppose I should add I feel a certain justification in trying to keep the buggers out as we are surrounded by a billion acres of fields... You should have seen my first efforts: wee-ing in a spray bottle and doing all the boundaries with it. Now, that's obsessive...

Stovers I believe it did work, Mashers. Kept a large spray bottle in the loo where my son and I topped it up. Got the idea from the internet. Only problem, it was just too onerous to keep the process going hence electric fence.
